U.S. plans to appoint an ambassador for the Arctic, due to the increased activity of Russian forces in the region.

US State Department spokesman Vedan Patel said the new ambassador will work with representatives of Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Russia, as well as indigenous groups.

“Peace and stability in the region are of strategic importance and a priority for Secretary of State Anthony Blinken,” Patel emphasized.

Blinken will soon appoint an ambassador, who must also be confirmed by the Senate.
