Novak Djokovic has won the Laureus award for the world’s best sportsman for a record fifth time at a ceremony in Madrid.
Djokovic concluded 2023 with three Grand Slam titles – the Australian Open, Roland Garros, and the US Open – and only lost in the Wimbledon final to Carlos Alcaraz. He has secured a record 24 Grand Slam titles and collected the Laureus award, which he also won in 2012, 2015, 2016, and 2019.
“I am incredibly honoured to have won my fifth Laureus award for World Sportsman of the Year. I remember back in 2012, when I first won it as a 24-year-old. I am very proud to be here 12 years later, reflecting on a year that has brought a lot of excitement and success to me and my fans,” said Djokovic, adding:
“The Laureus awards are so special because they represent recognition from 69 world-class athletes who make up the Laureus World Sports Academy. Earning the votes of my sporting heroes is what makes these awards so coveted across all of sport.”
At the ceremony in the Spanish capital, Barcelona footballer Aitana Bonmati was named the world’s best sportswoman of the year.
