METRO Cash&Carry Serbia marks IDAHOBIT – International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex phobia and Transphobia, by symbolically raising the LGBTIQ flag in front of the company’s headquarters in Serbia. This day is celebrated around the world every May 17th, on the anniversary of the decision of the World Health Organization to remove homosexuality from the list of diseases, which was adopted in May 1990.

METRO in Serbia, and in more than 30 countries around the world, nurtures a culture based on tolerance and respect, believing that the key to the company’s success is that everyone can be who they are, work without fear and discrimination. The attitude towards LGBTIQ people in METRO, but also towards all employees, is based on respect for human rights which are the same for everyone, as well as the fight against discrimination of any kind.

“We operate in a world full of diversity and for us, respect is a key value, both in mutual relations and relationships with our customers. The METRO team in Serbia consists of 1.200 people of different ages, genders, nationalities, religions, abilities, we come from different backgrounds and have different sexual orientations. We have been coming to work for more than 15 years without fear of discrimination, and everyone in the METRO house can be who they are. That is why we have dedicated our internal employees’ day, METRO Heroes Day, to celebrating diversity this year and decided to publicly show who we are and what we stand for. We are aware of the challenges that LGBTIQ people face in their daily lives and we as an employer believe that we can make their position easier to some extent. That is why the rainbow flag is in front of our headquarters in Belgrade as of today”, said Jovana Andjelic, Director of Human Resources at METRO Serbia.

In addition to the symbolic celebration of IDAHOBIT Day, METRO implements training programs for employees with the aim of further improving the culture of diversity, equality and inclusion. This year, the company will also publicly support EUROPRIDE in Belgrade, which takes place from September 12 to 18, and will take an active part in the activities of the corporate sector, which shares the same values in this important area.
