The tennis star, 34, continues historic quest at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and takes part in a training session at the Ariake Tennis Park.

Novak Đoković has landed in Tokyo and taken part in a training session as he continues his bid to secure a historic Golden Slam.

The world no. 1, who last week confirmed his participation at the Olympic Games, touched down in Japan’s capital on Wednesday afternoon.

The 34-year-old has already won the Australian and French Open this year as well as the Wimbledon title last month to claim his his 20th career Grand Slam title.

However if he wins the men’s title in Tokyo, which gets underway at the Ariake Tennis Park on 24 July, and the US Open in September, he will make history as the first male player to have achieved the feat.

Steffi Graff is the only player to have won all five titles in the same year, in 1988.

“The Olympics and the US Open are obviously my biggest objectives for the remainder of the season, and it’s going to be demanding,” Đoković told Montenegro station MINA.

“But I am full of confidence and motivated to represent Serbia in the best possible way. I am yearning for a medal in Tokyo, hopefully gold, and then I’ll go to New York aiming to complete it all.”

Keeping the dream alive

With rivals Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem not taking part at this year’s Summer Games, Đoković is the strong favourite to win.

And even Pablo Carreno Busta, the top-ranked Spanish player following Nadal’s decision to withdraw, seems to think so.

“He is at a very high level and if there is a favourite in Tokyo, it is him. But he is also the rival to beat, the one who has all the pressure behind him,” Carreno Busta said.

Đoković however only has one focus: to win for his country. It is also partly the reason why he changed his mind about competing at the Olympic Games.

“It came down to patriotism and my feelings for Serbia,” he said.

The draw for Tokyo 2020 tennis tournament will be made on Thursday 22 July.
