The city of Naples has bestowed the honour of honorary citizenship upon WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, as reported by the Italian news agency ANSA.
The Mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, presented Assange’s wife, Stella Moris, with the honorary citizen plaque during a formal ceremony.
“This award symbolically represents Naples’ appeal, a city that has always defended all freedoms. To defend and strengthen democracies, we must protect the freedom of the press. Strong democracies are built by robust media,” Manfredi stated.
Assange is currently incarcerated in London’s Belmarsh Prison, amidst ongoing efforts by the United States to extradite him under espionage laws for publishing classified information about Iraq and Afghanistan, and diplomatic cables between 2010 and 2011.
