The birth rate in China dropped to a record low of 1.09 last year, according to Chinese media as reported by Reuters. The Chinese Center for Population and Development Research also indicates that China has the lowest birth rate among countries with populations exceeding 100 million.
Concerned about the first population decrease in the last six decades, officials in Beijing are urgently rolling out a series of measures to boost birth rates, including financial incentives and improved childcare facilities.
In May, President Xi Jinping chaired a meeting to delve into this issue. Officials emphasize that the focus will be on education, science, and technology to enhance the quality of life. They will strive to maintain a “moderate birth rate” to support future economic growth.
