Among the 27 EU member states, Sweden has the safest roads, according to the European Commission. In Sweden last year an average of 18 deaths per million inhabitants were recorded in traffic accidents, while the highest number was in Romania with 93 deaths per million inhabitants.
The EC said that in 2021, 19,800 people died in traffic accidents across the EU, 1,000 deaths more than in 2020, but also 3,000 less than in 2019 before the pandemic period.
Over the last decade, the EU has seen a drop of 36% in deaths from traffic accidents, and the Commission’s plan is to halve the current numbers by 2030.
