The IT Research and Development Institute of the Novi Sad Biosens biosystem has launched a project to create the first digital village in Serbia.

The institute’s director Vladimir Crnojević, says that the Digital Village project will be launched on 24 May, involving farmers and residents of Mokrin, and that this is the first time that the digital transformation has been carried out in a large advanced village.

He says this should enable villagers to rely much more on information technology in everyday work in agriculture, to use digital platforms for banking, insurance and advice, but also to enable more efficient agricultural production, joint participation in the market through virtual cooperatives and buying and selling raw materials.

“If this proves successful, we will be able to apply digital transformation in every village in Serbia and in the entire agricultural community of our country. There are digital farms in the world, but no such farm where a large number of inhabitants of different profiles and activities are included in a broader social context”, says Crnojević to Novosti.

The Biosens institute is temporarily housed in the rectorate of the University of Novi Sad, but according to Crnojević, the institute’s own building, for which Prime Minister Ana Brnabić laid the foundation stone in May last year, is almost complete with internal works underway.

Biosens Research and Development Institute for biosystem information technologies is a leading Serbian digital innovation hub. Biosens’ achievements are recognized in Serbia and around the world. It is involved in some of the largest European digital innovation projects.

It collaborates with large multinational corporate actors in various industries such as software, computer games and insurance, and with national bodies.

The Biosens Institute is designated as a European Centre of Excellence. It is considered a basis of scientific progress in our country, and currently employs 140 scientists, with a further 100 planned in the next three years.
