Canberra has broken the world record for the greatest number of lights adorning an artificial Christmas tree this year.

The 22-metre tree in Civic, Canberra, Australia, was strung with 518,838 LED lights to raise money to help families affected by sudden infant death syndrome.

The tree was refurbished with 1.6 km of fake green fir from China and dressed with giant baubles and flashing presents.

It was topped with a 1.5m star filled with 12,000 glowing bulbs.

It was the centrepiece of the Christmas Lights in the City display and took a team of architects, engineers, designers and volunteers a year to put together.
