Uncle Sam has completed a century as the emblem of the U.S. armed forces, stars and stripes patriotism, Yankee imperialism and America itself.
In 1917, with war waging against Wilhelmine Germany, the streets of the United States were invaded by Uncle Sam’s face, which – pointing his index finger from under his top hat, intimated: “I Want You For The U.S. Army”.
Hundreds of thousands answered the call, a generation that ended fighting on the Marne.
Just over twenty years later the same bony face, sporting two piercing blue eyes and tufts of wavy white hair, again sought the same thing from the second generation of kids, who would once again fight the power of Berlin.
