The screening of the film “Saraband”, the last film directed by Ingmar Bergman, opened a festival dedicated to this Swedish director, producer and screenwriter at Yugoslav Cinematheque. On the occasion of the centenary of his birth, the Embassy of Sweden and partners participate in the largest international event organised in honour of Ingmar Bergman.

“Ingmar Bergman was undoubtedly one of the most famous Swedes. The marking of the 100th anniversary of his birth is not a necessity, but a desire and an obligation, because it gives us a chance to present the works of Bergman to new generations of film lovers. It gives them the opportunity to learn about this Swedish director who in his films demolished the taboo and displayed the soul of men as he saw them,” said the Swedish Ambassador H.E. Jan Lundin at the opening ceremony.

Seven Bergman films, theatre performances, panel discussions and creative workshops will be shown until 3rd November.

The guest of the festival is Maaret Koskinen, professor of film studies at the University of Stockholm, who devoted part of her work to studying Bergman and is one of the greatest experts in his artistic opus.

“You do not remain the same all your life, there is evolution, and that’s true, both in Bergman’s work and in us, the audience. If you watched his films 20 years ago and now, you will not experience them in the same way,” said Maaret Koskinen.

The festival was organised by the Embassy of Sweden in cooperation with the Swedish Institute, Yugoslav Cinematheque, KC Grad, Echo Animato, G12 HUB and M.A.M.M.A Production.
