One of the most famous village festivals held in the Balkans, the Vevcani Carnival, took place last month in the western Macedonian village of Vevcani.
Carnival-goers wore masks depicting the likes of Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Angela Merkel, as well as others related to the ongoing name dispute with Greece, continuing the long-established tradition of commenting on and satirising current events, politics and trends.
Merging old Pagan rituals with Christian motifs, this 1,400-year-old carnival has become a major tourist attraction in recent years, creating a new phase in the Orthodox Christian religious calendar, following Christmas and New Year.
