This central body is entrusted with the critical tasks of overseeing the application of AI legislation, pinpointing potential risks and regulatory breaches, and fostering the adoption of ethical AI practices. This strategic move positions the EU at the forefront of shaping the global trajectory of artificial intelligence in a responsible manner.

Situated within the European Commission, the AI Office is poised to serve as the nucleus of AI expertise and knowledge dissemination across the member states. Its responsibilities include the crucial enforcement of the AI Act, with a particular focus on general-purpose AI applications. “The establishment of the European AI Office marks a significant stride towards consolidating EU’s leadership in promoting and regulating trustworthy artificial intelligence, alongside enhancing international collaboration in this pivotal field,” the European Commission stated.

The office’s mandate extends beyond regulation, aiming to refine and advance policies that leverage AI’s potential to yield substantial societal and economic advantages across the European Union.
