Giovanni Pietro Barbano The New EULEX Head Of Mission In Kosovo And Metohija

The EU Council appointed Giovanni Pietro Barban as the new head of the EULEX mission in Kosovo and Metohija.  He will replace Lars Gunnar Wigemark in that position from June 26, 2023, and the mandate will last until June 14, 2025.

Barbano is a Major General of the Italian Carabinieri and the current director of the Stability Center for Police Units in Vicenza.

The decision to appoint Barban was made by EU member states in the Political and Security Committee (PSC).

The Council recently extended the EULEX mandate until June 14, 2025.  The EULEX mission to Kosovo and Metohija was launched in 2008 as the largest civilian mission within the Common Security and Defense Policy of the EU.  The mission works within the framework of Resolution 1244 of the United Nations Security Council.
