Philippe Guex graduated in economic sciences at the University of Fribourg in 1983, where he also acquired his PhD in economic sciences, in 1988. Until 1989 he was a visiting scholar in political sciences at Freie Universität in Berlin, Germany.
In 1989 Mr Guex joined the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs in Berne, carrying out his diplomatic training at the Swiss Embassy in London, and in 1991 he was appointed as a diplomatic officer in the Economic and Financial Division of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Berne.
In 1996 he became an economic and financial counsellor at the Swiss Embassy in Paris. Two years later he was appointed Head of Unit in the European Integration Bureau in the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs / Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Berne, followed by a posting as deputy head of the Swiss Mission to the EU in Brussels in 2002.
In December 2007 he was appointed Swiss Ambassador to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and as of August 2012, Mr Guex has served as Assistant Secretary of State, Head of the Americas Division, at the Department of Foreign and Political Affairs in Berne.
