The event outside the Kalamazoo school’s Heritage Hall featured 1,201 couples renewing their vows in a ceremony officiated by Mayor Bobby Hopewell, a WMU graduate.

The crowd surpassed the previous record of 1,087 couples, which was set in 2009 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.

A Guinness adjudicator was on hand to supervise the attempt and certify the new record.
