The University of Belgrade has made strides in this year’s Shanghai Ranking, securing a position between 301st and 400th place among the top 1,000 universities globally, as announced by the Government of Serbia.
The University of Belgrade stands as the highest-ranked university in the Western Balkans. At the pinnacle of the list stands Harvard University, followed by Stanford and MIT, Cambridge, Berkeley, Princeton, Oxford, Columbia, Caltech, Chicago, Yale, Cornell, and subsequently the University of California, Los Angeles.
While the Shanghai Ranking is informal, it carries great prestige to be featured on it, given that it encompasses less than four percent of the world’s universities. Its criteria include alumni who have received the Nobel Prize and the Fields Medal, faculty/researchers who are Nobel Prize and Fields Medal recipients, as well as the number of highly cited faculty/researchers within specific scientific fields.
Additionally, the criteria encompass the number of papers published in journals like “Science” and “Nature,” as well as the quantity of papers published in journals indexed by the “Science Citation Index” and “Social Science Citation Index.” The academic contribution relative to the number of staff members is also considered.
The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has been conducted since 2003 as an international assessment of academic excellence by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.
On the ARWU list, the University of Belgrade first appeared in 2012, ranking among the top 500.
Minister of Education Slavica Đukić Dejanović congratulated the University of Belgrade on its progress and highlighted that the University of Novi Sad maintained its position between 901st and 1,000th place on the Shanghai Ranking.
