Serbia made significant progress in suppressing illegal migration through the Balkan route when agreeing to harmonize the policy of issuing visas with the European Union, Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavski said.

“Serbia has made significant progress in the sense that it has agreed to harmonize the policy of issuing visas with the rest of the European Union. This means that they are limiting the traditional routes when people entered Serbia without visas and used it as a starting point for illegal migration to Europe,” said Lipavski in an interview with the radio station Radiožurnál.

He said that the fact that Serbia is introducing a visa regime with Iran, India and some other countries is a significant development.

“It is a significant advance, we managed to do it during the Czech presidency of the EU. Now it is necessary to make sure that those obligations are really implemented,” concluded the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, which holds the presidency of the EU until the end of December
