Hungarian diplomat Csaba Korosi was sworn in as the President of the 77th UN General Assembly, which will open in New York on Tuesday.

Kőrösi took his oath of office on the Charter of the United Nations in the presence of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the former UN General Assembly president, Abdulla Shahid.

In his speech following his inauguration, Kőrösi said the war in Ukraine must end as soon as possible and a ceasefire must be achieved. He thanked Hungary and the countries of the eastern European region for their support.

Kőrösi said his work as president would be guided by trust, solidarity, sustainability and science. Maldivian Abdulla Shahid was the previous president since 14 September 2021. Kőrösi ‘s inauguration marks the start of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.

The 77th UN General Assembly will open in New York on Tuesday. The first few days will be dedicated to protocol matters – approval of the session agenda, delegation membership and the working procedures. On September 20 a High-Level week will begin, which will be attended by heads of states and governments, as well as ministers from all over the world.
