Belgian Charles Michel was re-appointed head of the European Council at a summit in Brussels, his second two-year mandate, the EU body announced.

The EU government and state leaders who form the European Council unanimously re-elected the 46-year-old former Belgian prime minister to head the Council.

The extension of Michel’s mandate was expected, with no other candidate running for the post.

Michel, who took office on 1 December 2019, has had his term extended until 30 November 2024.
