Belgian Charles Michel was re-appointed head of the European Council at a summit in Brussels, his second two-year mandate, the EU body announced.
The EU government and state leaders who form the European Council unanimously re-elected the 46-year-old former Belgian prime minister to head the Council.
The extension of Michel’s mandate was expected, with no other candidate running for the post.
Michel, who took office on 1 December 2019, has had his term extended until 30 November 2024.
This position became permanent after the Lisbon Treaty in 2009. Michel was preceded by Belgian Herman Van Rompuy and Polish Donald Tusk, both of whom also served for two terms.
