European Heritage Hub launches Small Grant Scheme for heritage projects in EU neighbouring countries

Grants of between 2,000 and 50,000 EUR will be awarded to civil-society-led heritage projects, with a special focus on those advancing the green, digital and social triple transformation of our society

The European Heritage Hub, a pilot project co-founded by the European Union, today unveiled its Small Grants Scheme aimed at empowering heritage stakeholders from 11 the following neighbouring countries of the European Union: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo*, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, and Ukraine.

Whether EU accession candidates or close neighbours, these countries grapple with diverse challenges, from armed conflicts to post-conflict realities. The primary goal of the European Heritage Hub Small Grants Scheme is to encourage and equip heritage stakeholders to actively contribute to the wider European heritage movement and bolster their capacity to effectively address the challenges posed by the Triple Transformation of our society—green, digital, and social. Two other crucial areas of focus areas are capacity building and peace and reconciliation.

The scheme’s total budget for launch and operations is 263,475 USD, co-funded by the EU. As an associate partner of the European Heritage Hub, the ALIPH Foundation has pledged 110,000 USD toward this amount.

Upon signing the agreement with ALIPH in November last year, Sneška Quaedvlieg-Mihailović, Secretary General of Europa Nostra, stated: “In partnership with ALIPH, with its vast experience in safeguarding heritage in conflict areas, we shall together encourage and enable heritage-led and cross-border activities that encourage peace-building, reconciliation, dialogue and promote our shared values through the care for our shared heritage.”

Valéry Freland, Executive Director of ALIPH, said: “This agreement signifies not just our ongoing, trusted partnership with Europa Nostra, but also symbolises that in the face of crises and climate change, no one organisation is enough to protect humanity’s cultural heritage. We need an alliance of the willing to ensure that our patrimony is protected for future generations.” The scheme will allocate grants of between 2,000 to 10,000 EUR to smaller projects; 10,000 to 30,000 EUR to medium-sized projects; and 30,000 to 50,000 EUR to larger projects.
