Andrija Mandić, leader of the New Serbian Democracy, has been elected President of Montenegro’s Assembly after receiving 49 votes from the parliament members.

Subsequent to his election, Mandić took the oath of office and expressed his desire for reconciliation within Montenegro. He announced the commencement of a census on 30th November and assured his utmost efforts in promptly appointing the Chief Public Prosecutor, a Constitutional Court judge, and the missing members of the Judicial Council.

“By smoothing out the sharp edges of our differences, we work for the good of all in Montenegro, and that’s why our majority has decided on the census. It will be held in an atmosphere of unity and agreement,” Mandić remarked.

He emphasised the paramount power and responsibility of the Assembly in Montenegro, stating that the nation had long awaited such a robust democratic majority.

“We’ve demonstrated today that an overwhelming majority of the parliament voted for a singular vision and individual,” Mandić noted, stressing the significance of accelerating Montenegro’s European journey, with a forward-facing objective rather than a regressive one.

“Our political discourse must strive for justice and truth, veering away from practices that justify any means to an end. Today, after years in politics, what I earnestly believe in and wish to advocate from this esteemed position is solely – reconciliation,” he underlined.

Mandić added that those who seek unity and harmony are open to acknowledging worthy suggestions, as this fosters improved relations in Montenegro.

“As a man of Serbian ethnicity, a believer in God, affiliated with the Serbian Orthodox Church, speaking Serbian and writing in Cyrillic, I am no outsider in this land. It’s as much mine as it is of all my ancestors who have shared the challenges of our tumultuous history, just as it belongs to every Montenegrin, irrespective of religious or national sentiments. We shouldn’t and mustn’t be strangers to one another. We are brothers by the very soil we inhabit,” Mandić conveyed, concluding his speech with, “May God assist me in my endeavours.”
