United Nations Day, celebrating the ratification of the UN Charter on 24th October 1945, was marked globally. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a poignant message to member nations, urging a steadfast commitment to building a better world.

“The United Nations reflects the world as it is and the world we aspire it to be. It’s our duty to help construct a world of peace, sustainable development, and human rights for all. Our Charter, which came into effect 78 years ago, suggests as much. Above all, it embodies a spirit of determination to mend divisions, improve relationships, and build peace. To expand opportunities, ensure justice, equality, and empower women and girls. To deliver lifesaving aid to those in need and remain agile enough to address challenges that didn’t exist when the UN was founded – from existential climate threats to artificial intelligence risks.

The UN stands on timeless values and principles but must never be stuck in time. Hence, we always need to bolster our methodologies and bring a 21st-century focus to our tasks.

On this United Nations Day, let’s dedicate ourselves with hope and resolve to shaping a better world. Let’s pledge to a future that resonates with the ethos of our indispensable organisation.

We live in a divided world. We can and must be united nations,” Guterres’ heartfelt message, as released by the UN, read.

Marking the 78th anniversary of the UN, the UN in Serbia organised a special event at the United Nations House in Belgrade, unveiling a mural that depicts Serbia’s biodiversity and ecosystems.

Crafted by Marija and Stefan Šoln, the mural beautifully captures Serbia’s rich wildlife, showcasing species like the Balkan lynx, brown bear, Apollo butterfly, white-tailed eagle, and many others. It also features a plethora of plant species, underlining Serbia’s diverse ecosystems.

Speaking at the event, UN Resident Coordinator Francoise Jacob emphasised the significance of biodiversity, its alignment with Serbia’s green agenda, and the need for transformative action.

“Biodiversity is pivotal for sustaining life on Earth, and protecting Serbia’s ecosystems is a shared responsibility. Through this mural, we aim to elevate awareness, inspire societal action, and promote nature-based solutions,” Jacob stated.

Mari Yamashita, representative of the Secretary-General and the Head of the United Nations Office in Belgrade, highlighted that, “Restoring and preserving nature is vital for nurturing peaceful societies.”
