In 2023, the estimated average trust level in others among individuals aged 16 and older in the European Union was 5.8 (on a scale from 0 – not trusting at all, to 10 – fully trusting).
There were notable national differences, with Finland scoring 7.3 and Cyprus 3.6.
Among specific age groups, the highest levels of trust in others were most frequently reported by people aged 16 to 29 in most EU countries.
The results published by Eurostat show that this trend was observed in 15 countries, with Romania recording the highest score at 7.7. In five countries, however, individuals aged 65 and older reported greater trust compared to other age groups, especially in Finland (7.5).
Only two countries – Denmark (5.7) and Slovenia (4.7) – reported the highest trust levels among those aged 30 to 64. In other countries, various age groups gave the same average score.
