Ursula von der Leyen has been re-elected for a second five-year term as President of the European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union.
Her reappointment comes after securing strong support from Members of the European Parliament.
In a vote held in the European Parliament, von der Leyen’s nomination was approved by 401 out of 720 members, with 284 voting against and 15 abstaining. The threshold for re-election was 361 votes.
Von der Leyen, the first woman to hold the position, has outlined EU enlargement as a key priority for her upcoming term, emphasizing that the accession process will be merit-based. Her continued leadership is expected to steer the EU through significant challenges and opportunities in the coming years, including expansion and deepening integration within the union.
