Spanish Supreme Court Judge Isabel Perelló will become the first woman to preside over Spain’s Supreme Court and the General Council of the Judiciary, following a decision by members of the judiciary’s governing body.
Perelló, a Catalan by origin, received the support of 16 out of 20 members of the General Council, surpassing the three-fifths majority required for election.
Her appointment took over two months, marked by failed negotiations between Spain’s main political parties, the Socialists and the People’s Party.
Pereljo was born in the Catalan municipality of Sabadell in 1958. She speaks Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, and English.
During her career, she has served as a judge in the Balearic Islands, the Barcelona Court, the Catalonian High Court (TSJC), as well as the Andalusian High Court, Spain’s National Court, and the Constitutional Court.
