FIFA’s controversial decision to award Saudi Arabia the 2034 World Cup has sparked widespread criticism and concern over human rights
FIFA has confirmed Saudi Arabia as the host for the 2034 World Cup, a decision that has sparked fierce criticism from human rights groups.
Amnesty International warns that the tournament will “put many lives at risk,” highlighting concerns over workers’ rights and safety.
The tournament will feature 48 teams across 15 stadiums in five cities, likely held during winter. The decision was ratified by 211 FIFA delegates, with Saudi Arabia the sole bidder.
Despite the backlash, FIFA president Gianni Infantino praised the unity of the organization.
While Saudi Arabia promises an “exceptional edition” of the World Cup, FIFA’s human rights report underscores the need for substantial reforms.
The 2030 World Cup will be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.
