Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her 90th birthday on 21st April, marking a milestone that drew thousands of well-wishers to the streets near Windsor Castle in honour of Britain’s longest-serving monarch.
While the queen usually doesn’t like to make a fuss about her birthday, preferring to spend the day privately, she started it by greeting the crowds in the town, accompanied by Prince Philip. At midday, royal gun salutes were fired to mark the occasion.
In the evening, she lit the first of more than 900 beacons lighting up across the UK and overseas in honour of the monarch who has ruled Britain for 64 years.
While 21st April marks her actual birthday, lavish celebrations commemorating the occasion won’t take place until 10th-12th June, when her birthday is officially celebrated.
