Prices in UK shops fell in August on a year-on-year basis for the first time in nearly three years, since October 2021, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) has reported.
August saw a price drop of 0.3 percent compared to the same period last year, largely driven by summer sales on clothing and household items.
Excluding food, prices fell by 1.5 percent, marking the biggest drop in just over three years. Food prices, however, increased by 2 percent during the same period, but at the slowest rate since November 2021.
Additionally, prices of fresh food, such as fruits, meat, and fish, recorded their largest monthly decline since December 2020, thanks to lower supplier costs.
“Retail price inflation eased again in August as many retailers maintained promotional activities,” the report stated.
