Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, from the ruling South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO), has been elected as Namibia’s first female president following last week’s elections.
The Electoral Commission announced that she secured over 57 percent of the votes, while her closest rival, Panduleni Itula, received 26 percent.
Born on 29 October 1952, Nandi-Ndaitvah was elected vice president of SWAPO in 2017. Before becoming Namibia’s president, she served as deputy prime minister from 2015 to 2024, minister of international relations and cooperation from December 2012 to 2015, and minister of environment and tourism from March 2010 to December 2012.
Nandi-Ndaitva is also a longtime member of the National Assembly.
