Toshiyuki Kuroki and Yasuko Kuroki are dairy farmers from Miyazaki Prefecture in Japan and have been married for 60 years.
After 30 years of marriage, Mrs Kuroki suddenly lost her sight.
It was devastating for the couple, who had risen every morning to tend to their cows while bringing up three children.
Depressed, Mrs. Kuroki sealed herself away from the world. Her husband wanted to give her something she could enjoy, and he found the answer after he saw people admiring their pink shibazakura flower. He thought that if he planted more, people would come over to their house to keep his wife company.
Moreover, the flower has a sweet scent that she could enjoy. And so he quit his dairy farm and began to plant a garden for her. Soon, the garden began to surround their house.
It’s open to the public and attracts thousands of visitors every year. And most importantly, it’s put a smile back on Mrs Kuroki’s face.
