Germany is set to hold early elections on February 23, following an agreement among the leading parties in parliament.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) announced that the main parties have agreed on the date for the early elections. Scholz will formally announce a confidence vote in the government on 11 December, with the vote to take place five days later.

If the government fails to secure parliamentary support, as expected, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will confirm the election date.

Steinmeier remarked that Germany needs a government capable of taking action.
