In a pioneering move within the European Union, Finnish mining and chemical company Terrafame has begun extracting uranium, as announced by local media. The Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) has granted the necessary permit for this venture.
The uranium extracted by Terrafame will be transported abroad for further processing and use in nuclear energy production. The plant is expected to reach full capacity by 2026, with an annual production of approximately 200 metric tons of uranium.
This development marks a significant milestone in the EU’s nuclear energy sector, positioning Finland at the forefront of uranium extraction and processing.
