In 2023, the European Union produced 1.496 billion liters of sparkling wine from fresh grapes, marking an 8% decrease from 2022, when production reached approximately 1.624 billion liters.
According to Eurostat data, the top producers in 2023 were Italy, France, and Germany, followed by Spain and Portugal. Despite the decline, these countries remained dominant in sparkling wine production across the EU.

Exports of sparkling wine to non-EU countries also fell by 8%, dropping from 649 million liters in 2022 to 600 million liters in 2023. However, export levels still surpassed those of earlier years. The largest categories of exported sparkling wines included prosecco (44%, 266 million liters), sparkling wine from fresh grapes (17%, 100 million liters), champagne (15%, 91 million liters), and other sparkling wines with protected designation of origin.
Meanwhile, EU countries imported 5 million liters of sparkling wine from non-EU nations, reflecting the continued prominence of EU producers in the global sparkling wine market.
