Germany’s dog tax generated nearly 600 million euros last year, marking a 1.6 percent increase over the previous record set in 2022, according to data from the Federal Statistical Office.
Revenue from the tax, which has steadily risen over the past decade, has jumped by 41 percent between 2013 and 2023. However, this increase in revenue does not necessarily mean more dogs in German households.
The amount of the dog tax is determined by each municipality individually, and it depends on factors such as the number of dogs in a household and even the breed. As of 2023, approximately 10.5 million dogs were living in German households, according to a survey by the Pet Food Retailers Association.
Additionally, the prices of dog and cat food saw an average increase of nearly 15 percent in 2023.
