The Ukrainian Embassy in Serbia held a ceremony in Novi Sad to mark the 33rd anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.
“Generations of Ukrainians dreamed of and fought for a free and independent Ukraine. Their dreams became reality 33 years ago when they achieved the right to determine their own destiny. Today, 33 years later, Ukrainians are once again fighting to protect it from the unprovoked and unjustified Russian aggression,” said Emanuele Giaufret, the European Union’s Ambassador to the Republic of Serbia, who visited Novi Sad for the 33rd anniversary of Ukraine’s independence.
The Head of the EU Delegation also reminded that the EU has allocated 100 billion in aid from its own budget and provided support to Ukraine for a peace that must be sustainable and just.
The ceremonial event was held at the Taras Shevchenko monument in the Miroslav Antić Alley. The gathering was also attended by German Ambassador Anke Konrad, as well as representatives of the embassies of EU member states.
The Ukrainian Ambassador to the Republic of Serbia, Volodymyr Tolkach, addressed the attendees, expressing deep gratitude for the humanitarian and military support from the European Union, the United States, Canada, and all friends without whose help Ukraine would not be able to defend its territory and freedom.
“We believe that the Serbian people support our freedom. We would be happy to join the European Union together with Serbia and be with you in the future,” said Ambassador Tolkach.
The people of Ukraine celebrate their most significant national holiday—Independence Day—on 24 August.
