The Society for the Protection and Study of Birds of Serbia (DZPPS) conducted a survey of white stork nests from April to July this year, during which more than 200 volunteers visited nearly every settlement in Serbia.
The survey recorded an impressive 1,927 nests, the majority of which were located on electricity poles. In 1,593 active nests, the surveyors counted a total of 4,374 young storks, which symbolize the arrival of spring and new life.
This year saw a record-breaking 1,927 nests, with 1,137 located in Vojvodina and 790 south of the Sava and Danube rivers. Of the total nests, 1,597 were active, while 202 were empty. In 40 nests, only one or two adult birds were observed without any young, and for 88 nests, the presence of young storks could not be confirmed.
