Belgrade has been selected as the host city for the prestigious XXI World Congress of Economists, to be held in June 2026, marking a significant moment for the Serbian capital.
The decision, made by the Executive Committee of the International Economic Association (IEA), was announced by the Serbian Association of Economists.
“In a highly competitive bidding process, our proposal was deemed the best by the President and Executive Committee of the International Economic Association,” stated Aleksandar Vlahović, President of the Serbian Association of Economists. He highlighted the significance of this achievement by noting that Belgrade will become the world’s economic hub in June 2026, attracting over 1,000 of the globe’s leading economists from top universities.
One of the Congress’s most distinguished figures will be Professor Eric Maskin from Harvard University, a Nobel Prize laureate in Economics, who will chair the event’s program committee. Several other Nobel laureates and prominent economists, many of whom have served as top advisors to the world’s largest economies, are also expected to attend.
This will be the first time the World Congress of the International Economic Association is held in the region, and it marks the event’s return to Europe after a 20-year hiatus. The Congress will provide a unique platform for policymakers and the business community across the region to engage in meaningful dialogue, share innovative ideas, and gain insights from the world’s leading economic thinkers.
The IEA organizes the World Congress of Economists every three years, with the previous Congress held in 2023 in Medellín, Colombia.
