The Electoral Commission of Kenya has declared William Ruto as the country’s new president.

Ruto defeated his opponent, opposition leader Raila Odinga, in a close race.Until now, Ruto has been a deputy to outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta, the son of Kenya’s first president, who nevertheless supported long-time rival Odinga.

The race for the head of the country was the most uncertain so far, so it was expected that a second round of elections could be held for the first time.

Before the announcement, there was a division in the commission, as some believed that there were irregularities. The police were also on the scene to calm the tensions, and allegations of irregularities were made without details or evidence.

This is probably the last attempt for the 77-year-old long-time oppositionist Odinga.
