Finland and Sweden are backed by the U.S. Senate for their accession to NATO, the 30-member alliance.
This would be the most significant expansion of NATO since the 1990s. It comes as a response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as Russia warned both against joining the alliance.
Last month NATO’s 30 members signed the accession protocol for Sweden and Finland allowing them to join the U.S.-led nuclear-armed alliance.
