A delegation of the US Congress arrived on an unannounced visit to Taiwan, less than two weeks after the official arrival of Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi in Taipei, the BBC reported.

The group of United States representatives is led by Democratic Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts, the American Institute in Taiwan said.

The institute said a team of US politicians will discuss bilateral relations, regional security, trade, investment and other issues with senior Taiwanese officials.

It is added that the arrival of the five-member US delegation in Taipei is part of a wider visit to the Indo-Pacific region.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that US representatives will pay a two-day visit to Taipei and meet with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen. Her cabinet said the second high-level US visit in a month signals “strong support for Taiwan”.

The US has not officially recognized Taiwan, but maintains strong political and economic relations with the island.

China, which claims the island as its territory, carried out maneuvers that included the firing of missiles, warships and fighter jets around Taiwan’s airspace.

China opposes Taiwan’s official contacts with foreign governments.
