Swiss Army helicopters have been deployed to deliver water to thousands of thirsty farm animals during the hot summer.

A lack of rainfall this year has forced farmers to call in the army to bring refreshments to their animals and prevent a drought that could cause food shortages later in the year, Reuters reported.

Two-week operation is underway in Switzerland where Super Puma helicopters are used to refill the nearly empty tanks that farmers use for their cows, pigs and goats.

The commander of the Swiss Territorial Army, Matthias Tuscher, said that six helicopters have been mobilized in the operation, which will last until 19 August, and added that a total of about 400,000 tons of water could be put into the reservoirs by helicopters.

Similar operations were carried out during the drought of 2015 and 2018.
