At the official opening of Serbia’s pavilion at EXPO 2025 Osaka, Commissioner Žarko Malinović stated that Serbia was proud to be the only Western Balkan country with a standalone pavilion, underlining its ability to compete with the world’s most developed nations.
He said the pavilion, titled Society of Play, was opened on time and would serve as a symbolic bridge between EXPOs in Osaka and Belgrade.
Malinović noted high visitor interest and expressed hope that over a million people would visit in the next six months, highlighting “play” as a human superpower for building future resilience.
Architect Jakša Nikodijević reported that the pavilion was made from 95% recyclable and 80% reusable materials, fulfilling EXPO’s sustainability goals.
He said it was the only pavilion with a vertical living garden and was inspired by Belgrade’s Great War Island to reflect harmony between nature and urban life.
He added that international architects also contributed to the design, which includes interactive spaces inviting physical activity.
Organizers said the 930m² pavilion would also host Serbian businesses during thematic weeks, promoting local innovation to global markets.
