At Bocconi University’s “Next Milano” forum, Serbia’s Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Đedović Handanović, outlined a bold roadmap to achieve full energy sector decarbonisation by 2050.
Speaking to an international audience, she underscored the complexity of transitioning from coal without jeopardising energy security or economic resilience.
Rather than abrupt plant closures, Serbia will pursue a phased, stable shift. The recent lifting of its nuclear energy ban opens the door to atomic power as a key pillar of future supply.
Đedović Handanović also addressed the growing energy demands driven by digitalisation and AI, citing the Kragujevac data centre and a new regional supercomputer as examples of infrastructure needing reliable, clean power.
With €15 billion allocated for energy projects and enhanced cross-border grid connections, Serbia is positioning itself as a future energy and innovation hub.
Strengthening ties with institutions like Bocconi supports this long-term strategy.
