Securing Europe’s position on the Western Balkans

EU Europe

European Movement in Serbia, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) is organizing today, 23rd March, public discussion dedicated to the latest ECFR policy brief ‘Securing Europe’s position on the Western Balkans’.

More than ever, the European Union is surrounded by crises. However, looking only at the crises at the European borders, we might forget that closer to the EU’s heart, tensions are rising as well.

Especially in the Western Balkans, progress could be in danger and geopolitical competition is gaining traction as Russian and Turkish influence is growing. Yet European strategic thinking on the Western Balkans is notably disjointed and fragmented.

Discussants will be:
Ms. Vessela Tcherneva (Director of Programmes and Director of Sofia Office, ECFR);
Mr. Fredrik Wesslau (Director of Wider Europe Programme & Senior Policy Fellow, ECFR);
Mr. Francisco de Borja Lasheras (Associate Director of Madrid Office & Policy Fellow, ECFR).
Moderator will be Ms. Maja Bobic (Secretary General, European Movement in Serbia).

The main objective of the event will be presenting and discussing the main findings and policy recommendations of the brief, recently published by ECFR after groundwork and research in the region. The discussion will gather policymakers, civil society, diplomatic community and media.
