After years of quiet preparation and mounting anticipation, Denmark has stepped into the spotlight—officially assuming the rotating Presidency of the Council of the European Union as of 1 July.
This marks the eighth time the Scandinavian nation has held the role since joining the EU in 1973, and the symbolic handover was marked by a ceremonial hoisting of the EU flag alongside Denmark’s iconic Dannebrog outside the Foreign Ministry in Copenhagen.
Over the next six months, Denmark will chair hundreds of Council meetings, steering key legislative debates and setting the political tone for the bloc.
With its reputation for pragmatism and social cohesion, many in Brussels are optimistic that Denmark’s leadership will offer steady guidance through an increasingly complex European landscape.
