The Secretariat for Environmental Protection has announced that the process of placing under protection two new sites in Belgrade, the landscape of exceptional features “Ada Ciganlija” and the protected habitat “Wintering of little vranca”.

Also, the Secretariat has started the procedure of placing under the protection of the landscape of exceptional features “Foreland of the left bank of the Danube near Belgrade”.

The creation and valorization project of the artificial lake Bela reka has been completed, and the valorization of the area of ​​Šuplja stena and Stepin lug is currently being developed, while the valorization of Gročanska Ada is planned for 2023.

Protected sites in the territory of the city of Belgrade comprise 1.89 percent of the total area of ​​the city, while the plan is to increase the percentage of protected sites to 2.54 percent in the next two years.

The Law on Nature Protection prescribes the procedure for declaring protection, and in order for an site to receive the status of a protected area, it must have a pronounced geological, biological, ecosystem or landscape diversity, and be significant as a habitat for bird species and other important migratory species in accordance with international regulations.
