European Council President Antonio Costa visited Belgrade today, where he held talks with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić as part of a broader tour of the Western Balkans. At the joint press conference, Costa reaffirmed the EU’s strong commitment to Serbia’s European path, emphasising that “the future of Serbia lies in the European Union.”
He praised the progress Serbia has made on its reform agenda and encouraged continued engagement in dialogue with Kosovo, noting that “normalisation of relations remains essential for stability in the region.” Costa also underlined the EU’s readiness to support Serbia economically and politically through the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans.
President Vučić reiterated Serbia’s strategic goal of joining the European Union, despite recent criticism related to his official visit to Moscow. “We remain committed to our EU path,” Vučić said, acknowledging that while Serbia maintains its traditional partnerships, European integration remains a national priority.
Costa’s visit comes at a crucial time for EU enlargement policy and sends a clear signal of Brussels’ willingness to deepen cooperation with candidate countries that demonstrate genuine commitment to reforms and democratic values.
