Former Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, Ms. Annalena Baerbock, has been elected President of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, marking a historic moment for global diplomacy and Germany’s international role.
Her election victory, with 167 votes in favor out of a total of 193 UN member states, reflects broad international confidence in her leadership, commitment to dialogue, and vision for multilateralism.
Ms. Baerbock becomes the first woman from the Western European regional group to be elected to this prestigious position, and the fifth woman overall to preside over the most representative body of the United Nations. At 44 years of age, she is also one of the youngest leaders in the institution’s history.
Her appointment comes at a critical juncture for the international community. The UN General Assembly today serves as a key forum for global dialogue and consensus, especially in light of blockages in the Security Council concerning crises such as the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza.
Baerbock assumes the leadership of the Assembly at a time when the world is in need of responsible, bold, and inclusive leaders—ready to address global challenges such as climate change, poverty, conflict, and the erosion of trust in international institutions.
