The traditional Oktoberfest event was opened by Munich’s mayor, Dieter Reiter, with the symbolic tapping of the first beer barrel at noon, officially kicking off the world’s largest beer festival for the 189th time.
This year, a litre of beer costs between €13.60 and €15.30. Since last year, drinking water has been available for free at fountains, while a litre of bottled water averages more than €10.
Around 6 million guests are expected at this year’s Oktoberfest, which runs until 6th October. They will be met with extensive security checks at the entrances, about 600 police officers, and a ban on carrying large bags, knives, and glass bottles.
The use of drones is also prohibited.
